A 2019 Splatoon art book contains illustrations of pop culture items in the Splatoon universe. One of them is a Splatoon version of Super Mario Bros. (top), which is modeled after the original Famicom cartridge for the game (bottom). Note the similarities between the placement of the elements in both illustrations.

what they mean: there’s an episode of the Kirby anime that’s about Tuff & Dedede being too scared to go to the dentist and Tuff’s parents use Kirby as an example of good oral hygine because he scrubs away with a toothbrush every night so for the rest of the episode I was living with this sense of anxious dread that Kirby canonically has teeth and worse, that we would be shown Kirby’s teeth in the same agonizing detail as a 3-minute long scene of Dedede’s CGI teeth being mined by these little plaque monsters but in the end the Dentistry Monster that Dedede orders can’t hurt Kirby because he DOESN’T have teeth and I was so fucking relieved
